I'm not real happy about cameras everywhere either, but they work in areas where there aren't enough to go around. Private security cameras (you don't think the Bank is Big Brother for having one in the ATM, I presume) have often been used to solve crimed. Cops can't be everywhere. In high crime areas, like subway stations, I'm all for serveilence cameras.
