No, I'm saying that we could put a gal to work doing extensive edits with just a little bit of instruction. It was done all the time in Tape Prep.

To do any edit, the gal needed to know:

1. How to open the file

R TECO EBlovex.yyyy$Y$$

2. The two commands to search with strict rules of using S if you're on the page and N if you want to get off the page.

The problem I had was that I started thinking about the video TECOs that drew everything in core. In these cases, the N and S search were almost functionally...

3. The I command.

4. The D, T and K commands with the arguments.

5. EX$$

6. If in panic mode, ^C^C.

The reason TECO was so agile to use is because it made the person think in characters which is exactly how they were stored.

In other words, with the in-person-from-a-human equivalent of "spend half an hour with the tutorial and take notes"? "The page"? Probably something I'm not getting here. Not...

Everybody who worked in Tape Prep had their 3x5 notes. With TECO, they didn't use their notes after a couple weeks. TECO had consistency w.r.t. its commands. The rules didn't change just because I used a T command rather than a D or K command.

The editing commands had the same formats. If I wanted to type, I'd use T. If I wanted to delete lines, I'd use K. If I wanted to delete characters, I'd use D. And their specifications were the same. The only way we f***ed up was if we couldn't count (characters, lines, or pages).

All I'm saying is that, when the edict of the f***ing idiots came down stating that we had to use SOS for an editor, it took a lot longer to train these women and the editing errors were higher. Line editors are very forgiving about sloppiness and do not "teach" the users the fact that everything was characters. If sloppiness is allowed, people will be sloppy. TECO smushed you hard if you were sloppy. People learned how to use the computer, how a computer works (sorta), and its limitations when they used TECO. In addition, most of the characters typed were characters that went into the file. It didn't waste our keystrokes trying to convince the f***ing editor to insert characters.
