I noted: I should note the way to tell if people are Feynman groupies when you ask them or they ask you about his...

It is true that education is a bureaucracy like other insbreastutions in US and 1st world society, and it perpetuates itself. I think that we should not specifically dump on trade schools or Comm. Colleges and I only give them as examples.

I have seen primary and secondary schools in the US from Fairbanks to FL. And I have also now seen schools in the UK, Japan, France and other parts of Europe as well as NZ. In the US, I am surprised that we have not seen more Columbine style shootings and also earlier (like say the 70s and 80s civil unrest was not limited to ghettos and colleges). But I do foresee more and even bigger casuality figures.

The problem with primary and secondary education (and I have a lot of friends some think of themselves as potential targets {bullets}) in the US is that teachers are spending too much time on security. We are asking teachers to do more than motivation (which motivates many of them), but to also teach topics they have little or no interest (science and math being common), grades they have no interest teaching, and micromanagement by boards, parents, others with vested interests (any come to mind? 8^). The problem there lies with parents before kids even get to schools (the first 4 years).

But so called liberal artist "Renaissance" people should otherwise, one would think, be smart enough, and flexible enough to respond to changing world conditions.

Maybe "Renaissance" people aren't the best analogy when average citizens aren't responsive enough? Old Greek (not Roman, they were heathens) dead people, leaders, writers: past paradigms aren't cutting it. Toss out Toffler (I think he's a waste of time). But we do have to live in a physical and a biological world. That's a constraint. But there is too much potential and too many ways individuals and groups can proceed. We have to make up some social agreement.
