Using XEDIT and UPDATE with control files was almost as easy as using vi and make with SCCS: nearly automatic source control. IIRC you added LCL to the AUX file types in the control file header, created a COMP AUXLCL file, inserted a line for the new update file e.g. "LCL00001 fix bug in IBM code", and invoked the editor with "XEDIT fn ft ( CTL COMP SID LCL00001", which would create your fn LCL00001 update file for you; and tell you if you ran out of sequence numbers for inserts, as it figured out the best increment for each block of changes to give you most future space for inserts. Edited all system config files with it, and used it for various admin and other files in case I screwed up. As a new update file was effectively a diff, you could validate it before applying it to build an updated source. Various execs were available to iterate across a bunch of files and apply updates, similar to make without the smarts, and you could easily make a list of files yourself with "FILELIST spec ( EXEC ARGS" and then run the generated CMS EXEC with "EXEC CMS UPDATE ( CTL COMP" and maybe a few other args or unremembered tweaks. -- Thanks.
