It depended upon the area at DEC... Field Service was a good old boys club a lot longer than it should've been much to the detriment of a number of female Field Service folks I knew...
Eventually they worked their way up the line to higher positions and the promotions and stuff began to be fairer.
I never could understand that... but I was one of those wierd liberal arts college grads who became a tech later in life as a kind of second career -- so I was also outside the good old boy network.
I saw very few women in senior field service positions in the 80's when I was at DEC. I also saw a couple of top notch women Field Engineers (and some who were hired for show and EEOC points...)
The good ones could fix stuff... (and one in particular scared the #$*&^ out of me one night when she bailed me out of an LP06 disaster and almost took my head off with the parts kit.) Twice as good as the rest of the guys and twice as mean if you crossed her. Good survival technique. (She knows who she is and I fun). Hope she's still doing Vaxes and Alphas somewhere and sees this.
