Not on the farm. The determinant of who did what had to do with time, the season, and strength. Some days, the females were stronger than the males available. There's a show on PBS, I think, about people trying to relive cattle ranching in the olden days. The biggest problem has to do with people who cannot identify the work they should do right now nor the work they will have to do tomorrow (scheduling). Most of the grumblings has to do with wishing one could do the other person's job.
