Wow. Despite the pessimistic Verizon estimate (and the fact that 12 hours after the fire I had yet to see a single phone truck), late yesterday morning there were 8 or 9 Verizon trucks at the edge of the highway, including two "trailers" about 200 feet apart. What they did was chop off the cable (thicker than my arm) away from the fire damage and run each cable through a seemingly-appropriate hole into each trailer. Through the windows of the trailers I could see a couple of guys working with tools. About 9 hours later, they took the cables out of the trailers (obviously after some sort of extension) and joined them up overhead (this I did NOT see... I'm guessing some sort of sealable plug coupler, but I honestly do not know how you splice a thousand copper pairs overhead so this is a guess.) Within a few minutes of this all the phone lines and the DSL connection came back up. (Not simultaneously, for a while one would work but not another). There were still a couple trucks overnight running throughout the neighborhood. And this morning they seem to be all done!

When I was doing it, we used a little white crimp-ons affectionately called "beanies". :-) Depending on the job it could go fast or slow. If it...

And everything seems to be back up and solid, great!

That was explained in the next sentence. "Sound out" means you put a tone on one end and find...

Still do not understand what would make the telco cable glow red, shoot out sparks, and burn. I'm guessing an AC line cross somewhere.

Tim.
