transputers again was: The dissolution of Commodore 2937
Tradition is probably the only reason we do. When a new project comes around there is usually a fairly long discussion about which OS's we could use that would get us out of vxWorks.
I've spoken with a few people who have paid the big money for kernel source access in order to develop bsp's, and they said there are considerable quality problems in the kernel and drivers. Pretty much the usual thing you find when there is no routine inspection and walkthrough.
It is interesting how often projects have to be reminded of this- the illusion of vxWorks as a turnkey solution to the OS problem is compelling for some reason. Perhaps its easy to forget that things happen a year later that can kill the project as easily as funding being pulled.
The consensus of the project management is that we would have missed the launch opportunity and the project would have been cancelled.
Its a civilian science mission- at least the results of it will be published. Since I've identified the OS, I probably should not mention the mission by name since in the US we have abdicated all power and authority to security personnel who seem never to have to explain themselves. I have been told that I cannot even discuss the operating systems or architectures we use for regular workstations. Greg subs was: transputers again was: The dissolution of Commodore Oh yeah. I've held one in my hands. It had the lead covers for sinking and the water soluble ink. I also found various pre-enciphering comm sheets including one for clear text...
