using 3390 mod9s 3189On Tue, 21 Mar 2006 21:17:59 -0700 in alt.folklore.computers, Anne & using 3390 mod9s 3190 I had done a lot of virtual memory (internal) enhancements on cp-67 and moved them over to... Did they ever build a more optimal ordering or capability into the sysgen? There was a VS-REPACK or whatever product. Used to allocate drives in quarters, use the second quarter for high activity data, the fourth quarter for rarely referenced data, and shuffle data such that the drive with the highest activity second quarter contained the lowest activity first and third quarters, and vice-versa. Allocation by cylinder and with minidisks kept this easier than it would have been a track (or block) at a time. The CMS approach of keeping the active disk and file tables in local VM memory seemed to keep response times way down for file ops. Using shared segs for fairly static disk directories: S, Y, P, and L (local) helped by moving more I-O from the filesystem to paging. Used to just EXECIO * DISKR files onto the program stack or later into REXX arrays-stem variables, unless they were very large. Ability to make more stuff cached in main memory would have been one facility I'd have liked to see in HPO. -- Thanks.
