local connected 3270 were significantly faster (hundreds of kbytes-sec) ... however interactions were half-duplex and the keyboard was locked during the interactions.
we had a couple hardware patches for the 3277 ... one was a FIFO box that fit where the keyboard plugged into the displayhead which would buffer keystrokes during the period that the keyboard would normally be locked. another was piggypacking some resisters inside the keyboard that controlled repeat key startup delay and rate of repeat. this was useful for the cursor movement keys, for positioning the cursor on the screen. one problem was that you could increase the rate to higher than the screen update ... so the cursor position would lag ... and then still "coast" after you had released the key. if you had your keyboard modified for very high repeat rate ... it could take some practice getting feel for releasing the key and still have the cursor stop at the desired position.
these fixes were obsoleted in the switch-over from 3272 controller and 3277 terminals to 3274 controllers and 3278-3279-etc terminals ... since much of the 3277 electronics were moved back into the 3274 controller (reducing per terminal manufactoring costs).
