winscape 2180And, why does the magic number have to be 50%? Enforcing this number doesn't work in racial issues; it definitely isn't going to work in matters that require a certain knack and intelligence. Pro football is 100% male. Are the PC idiots going to insist (and when they insist, they do by law or by lawsuits) that the love mix be 50%? If it's a required course for all CS freshmen to take, it is crap. Four years from now the PCitis will have taken another viewpoint. This is admirable. I'd love to have them doing this analysis on real stuff, like IEEE papers combined with physics papers. Or let them do this soft stuff with history. The same question can be asked about males. Why are there so few males in CS? I don't care about a bully pulpit. I care more about the inherit dumbing down. A clbutt like this is going to attract females hunting for pelts but completely discourage the females who may really like this work. It is hard enough to be smart in this society (male and female alike); why make the very people you want to do this work the subject of the course?
I'm getting PCed. I'm not allowed to become angry at wasting valuable learning time? I'm not allowed to become offended at discrimination becoming formalized and socially acceptable? I am not allowed to protest the dumbing down of our smartest kids? It isn't broke. What is broke is this insistence that ability be ignored in favor of a loveual nose count of bodies. So? Tell me why it has to be 50%? EVen buttuming that the "stats" are correctly presented (which they aren't), why do the numbers have to be equal? How are you going to make these groups diverse? Force them? A lottery? What if the subject matter doesn't appeal to the majority of females? What if this narrow discipline bores most women? winscape 2181 I'm sure there are people who will insist that there must be some sort of subtle discrimination at work if the ratio of men to women in computing isn't exactly equal to the... winscape 2185 snip Was it ever like that? Most U.S. undergraduate programs have some requirement that students... It is all smoke and mirrors. Instead of working on real problems, learning real stuff, the socially acceptable actions are to worry about matters that have no bearing on getting any production done. I'll be finding out when I can think of a way to ask the questions without impacting his performance in that school. The questions I would be asking cannot be asked by a male in this PC-infected society. Because he is a male, he would be targeted by the more militant females and this is not a good way to establish a learning pattern as a freshman. This is a subject to talk about over a beer at the bar. Not one to waste a whole clbutt slot during a Freshman year of college. Because the females and males taking that course would be better served if they used that time in a physics lab and lecture. winscape 2187 sure do When I say "more technical schools", I mean schools that emphasize math and science, rather than, say, schools offering two-year programs with technical courses only. Think MIT, not Joe's Neighborhood Technical College... Sigh! Imagine that you are one these rare females who do want to get a CS degree. Now, these females have chosen an unpopular career. It is not socially acceptable to be smart. Furthermore, these females are recent high school grads where they were probably the smartest person in their clbutt. This also has made them a social piranha. It isn't males who are doing this discrimination, but other females. Now you shove them into a clbutt where the ratio of male::female is even 3::1 and there are all kinds of hormonal adjustments, territorial imperative adjustments, and study adjustments that have to made. On top of all this, the subject matter becomes intensely personal since you, the female oddball CS student, are the subject matter of the course. This is NOT a freshman level course. Has anybody ever considered that this may be normal? And that any other ratio would be abnormal? winscape 2186 Yes. Yes, this is, or was, the prerequisite for graduation, not the major and minor degree programs. Some people got done with the painful stuff immediately; other waited until... Of course this learning is a good thing. But this the wrong topic at the freshman level, especially if the goal is to attract more females into the degree program. You are not....IMO :-). It is idiocy. I want to find out how bad it is without getting this young male into trouble. The information, which I want, he cannot ask because he is male and would be emasculated if he voiced them. BAH winscape 2183 snip One more point I meant to respond to: I already said that people with a really compelling interest might not care. Others, though, probably *do* care -- okay, not about fitting... winscape 2184 I am telling you that they don't. Note that we were talking about those with a compelling interest. That means that these people have itch that can't be scratched and...
