Yes, this is, or was, the prerequisite for graduation, not the major and minor degree programs.

Some people got done with the painful stuff immediately; other waited until the last minute to get graduation prereqs done. This is not the prereqs required to get a scence or math, or any other major.

Yes, they are shopping, taking test drives. That's all the more reason to offer a course that emulates what the real work is rather than a course that whings and tries to find blame for a perceived lack of interest.

I didn't go to a technical school. The nephew is not going to a technical school.

I can't think of a single job that doesn't use computing nor math nor science. Including art.

That hasn't been fluff in the past. Most of that stuff helps improve objective analysis. I'm not so sure about the latest stuff but I'm talking about the old-fashioned scifi and computer games. A bit of gaming yakking I lurk is about feelings and soap opera scenarios and stuff.

My point is that NOBODY has identified the problem. Somebody has made a leap of logical faith and buttumed that uneven nose counts is due to loveual discrimination. This is the habitual thinking. It is a socially approved form of thinking. If anybody suggests that a normal mix is 5::1, they get ostracized, lawsuits, and all kinds of legal hbuttles.

It IS the result. There is no other outcome other than in fairy tale which end "..and they lived happily ever after." This is a fact of human existence.

This is more rumor talk. Do you see how powerful that can be? There is a segment of any population who will do any work for money. If the rumors say that foo is where you can start at $150K-year, this population will take that major. Some of this is due to inflated market bubbles. Some of it is due to government incentives to fill a sector that is in trouble. Others is just whimsey of what is popular at the time. There are the ones that are in response to threat.

It would be nice if the winnowing happened before freshman but I don't think anybody has got the guts to do that.

This is somebody's fiction (that nerds have no fun or do no human interaction). Computer gaming among the young has done more to build the pecking order status of nerds than anything else in this world. A kid who can figure out gaming problems is a consultant to all the other kids in the neighborhood. How can you possibly buttume that this bad; the youngsters are already acquiring the skills of consulting business whenver they get a phone call from another kid who can't figure out something about his game or computer.

This is based on a story told by a father who had a nerdy son but was needed and a hero of all the other kids in the neighborhood because the boy had the knack of working with computers.

Because it can't be fixed by adults. This is something that can only be fixed by the kids. It is the adults' job to provide resources and guidance and experience but it is not the job of the adults to organize activities to the point where it is no longer fun or creative.

No. If you try to recruit by giving a seminar breastled "Why Foobar work is unlike by females" you are going to lose any interest. The breastle itself is emphasizing asocialism.

If they're having fun; they're saying alot. If they're getting shoveled nothing but bullpoo, they are also saying a lot.

More importantly, one hopes that they are talking to kids in other majors and learning how to apply their skills to the computing problems of other disciplines.
