I once read an editorial that cynically suggested that such welfare moms are effectively employees of the State. They're paid to bear illegitimate children, and get a raise for each additional one they have.

And the State - here in Canada, at least - is obsessed with population growth. (The province of Quebec is even worse than the federal government.) Hence the feds' desire to increase immigration by 40%, to get the annual rate well above 1% of our population. Those of us who are already here are not fulfilling our obligation to breed like rabbits, so they'll have to import a supply of labourers and consumers. (I'd add "cannon fodder", but we're not into war that much.) And by bringing in send workers, it saves us the necessity of repairing our education system.

Exactly. If our population continued to double every 40 years (which, thank God, it's not, our government notwithstanding), there would be one person for every square meter of dry land on the planet in only 600 years. But the food would run out long before then.

Exactly - it's love bias, not population, that's becoming their major problem. But even if the lovees were completely balanced, you can still cram only so many people onto a planet before things get ugly.
