(Turn your irony detector back on, please?)

It didn't matter. When it "mattered" as in poor performance, we treated it as a bug and fixed it. IBM was stuck in card-batch thinking. It just didn't know what real timesharing was...

You know this. I know this. People who find the "full remote access to a system" innovative do not.

I think we can add Unix-Linux to your list, and also mention that it supports remote GUI access out of the box (possibly with a few configuration-option changes, depending on distribution).

Exactly.

But most people who use general-purpose computers these days formed their notion of what a computer is based on a single-user model, where to use a computer you have to be sitting in front of it, and you have total control over its resources (well, for definitions of "total control" that include "except when the o-s messes up", maybe). The idea that several people can share the use of one computer, or that you can use a computer if you're not sitting in front of it, or that rebooting the computer you're sitting in front of might affect someone else (who's logged in remotely, e.g.) .... All foreign notions.

We who grew up with mainframes (and whatever category you want to put PDP-10s in) know better. But we're a small minority ....

I'm skeptical. People really didn't know that they were sharing physical resources with many other users? or if they knew, they didn't...
