science center did project in 1965 for virtual machine thing (parbreastioned) called cp40 on a 360-40 (that they had customed modified with virtual memory hardware). when the official 360 product with virtual memory hardware came out, 360-67, they moved cp40 to the 360-67 and called it cp67 ... recent post this morphed into vm370 for 370s. in the 370 time-frame some amount of the virtual machine support stuff started migrating into the hardware. eventually this migration culminated in LPARS (logical parbreastion) which is part of nearly every mainframe operation today. an old virtualization reference: however, it does seem to have infected the rest of the industry. small sample of news items from the past couple days mentioning virtualization: winscape 2288 Fair enough.
