Should... I won't tell you how many times I crashed OS's because of either bad driver code or bad hardware.

If every data path had ECC and all were redundant, and if all memory was perfect and all disk media never errored we'd have something close to that.

Of course it's a "should" :-). But TOPS-10 was seriously way ahead making that "should" a reality. That is one of the things that SMP did--provide more than one data path from each CPU...

Right now I just hope the ECC on the memory is good enough to allow me to replace it at a time of my chosing. I hope the disk mirroring and RAID is redundant enough to fail slowly -- one disk at a time so I can replace them without downtime.

I pray my Sun V120's never lose the motherboard or SCSI controller so my mirroring keeps them up 100% of the time.

I just keep getting grayer. A Vax cluster was so much better than some of this -- but this is driven by price and performance. We can only pay so much for the hardware so do it in budget.

Yeah bigger badder Suns would work -- but if I'm getting 5 years from stuff like DELL PowerEdge 2450's and Sun V120's the price of higher end gear doesn't seem justified to management.
