Dropped news connections happen all the time. I just don't see them; I let leafnode+ handle it for me with a retry. I did bite the bullet and subscribe to a professional news service.

They have a sustained rate limit of 300 kilobit as their lowest offering. Sustained rates for me is more like 2-5 kilobits at the most; and leafnode+ hides the nitty-gritty.

The point about what I do is that I don't use any other service than raw bandwidth. I have access to servers that handle my mail, news and other stuff; so what the ISP does is transport a mostly encrypted bit stream to my home. There are limited options for them to screw things up without alienating one of their major business segments (hope parts of corporate vpns).

Oh, I see what you're saying. I thought you were talking about "pure" code; it doesn't call other routines written in something else. That's the first thing kiddies would do; and usually our...

It takes some effort, but in terms of money it is pretty cheap. My latest whizzy laptop cost more than all the mini-itx server stuff combined.

And the effort is second nature for an old sysadmin like myself. I got a real benefit the other day of doing it throughly like a large install. One of the disks in my gateway server decided to spontaneously toast it's electronics and take the case power supply with it. So, exchange disk (still on warrenty) and power supply (ditto), mount them back in place; and restart the raid. Voila, news spool back; including whatever happened in this group the last 100k postings.
