i've frequently butterted that a major reason (internal network was larger than the arpanet-internet) was that the internal network had gateway-like technology in every node from just about the beginning ... which the internet-arpanet didn't get until the great switch-over on 1-1-83

a major change-over to the internet was the actual deployment of major production backbone ... not just having the technology for major backbone. nsfnet backbone rfp announcement.

we weren't allowed to bid on the rfp

however, we did get a technology audit by nsf ... which resulted in something that claimed what we had operational was at least five years ahead of all bid submissions to build something new ... although some of the technology appears to more likely appear in internet2, closer to 20 years later:

we were asked to consult with this small client-server company over ten years ago ... that wanted to do payment transactions on their server ... they had this technology called ssl ... and has since grown into this stuff frequently called e-commerce:

note that some of the other technology was an outgrowth of of some work at the science center
