Hiring practices have gotten tighter as business cycles have similarly tightened and shortened. Employers want to be more selective in hiring and do less training or retraining. Instead of a probationary period, people are brought in as consultants before hand to avoid all the EEO, health benes, etc. complications that employees bring. It's not the era of Watson and golf courses.

I disagree.

Unions hold power in the US. The paper wasn't about Unions or blue collar. It was about women scientists, professionals.

"Deserves" got nothin' to do with it. You get the opportunity to attend, and you have a chance to better your life based on the potential of that opportunity. You can also get hit by a car, but health insurance is a separate issue excepting the economics of it. I've not gone up to Capitol Hill in about 2 years. You can't cover everything so you can pay attention to that aspect for me excepting when it involves stuff outside my jurisdiction (CA vs MA for instance) and can be backed up with further reading references.

Go read some of what Rickover wrote about. Read about his life. "Business" is many times less than pure. You are getting away from the problem of the gender issue. You are mixing and confusing peripheral issues.

Capitalism is fine when you have it based on a dominant middle clbutt and have democracy. I think the jury is still out whether it should be direct or representative. We have representative democracy as a compromise to big land owners. etc. etc. etc. You didn't throw in the buzz phrase triparte "checks and balancing."
