America=The Roman Empire 2668
This is alarmist nonsense, George. Mexicans are coming to this country for economic reasons, not because they're trying to take back land. Those who work for a while and send money home won't make much difference. Those who stay will be buttimilated in 20 years. This is the same tune we hear with every big round of immigration, and US society hasn't fallen apart yet. Well... to the extent that it is falling apart, it's mostly because caused by a guy from Texas. I guess Texas is close to Mexico.... America=The Roman Empire 2670 But it does make a difference. The irish came over LEGALLY and the Mexicans are crossing our borders ILLEGALLY. They are in violation of US law simply by crossing that... snip I think we're due for some serious party realignment any year now. Who will end up on top is anyone's guess, and of course in a realignment scenario, the two parties won't represent the same interest coalitions anyway. States have always had eminent domain. It's been clear forever that if a state wants to build a road, they can force people to sell their property if it's in the way. The recent ruling found that states can use eminent domain to force people to sell their property so it can be turned over for other *private* use. People on the right despise this idea because it's a huge abridgment of property rights, and people on the left despise it because it's just one more way for politicians to use the power of the state to benefit well-connected corporations. America=The Roman Empire 2669 That's not the point. The point is that "officially" we wanted them. We had a big, empty country to fill. There weren't many (if... America=The Roman Empire 2671 If that what it takes to secure our borders, that's what it takes. We have to be ready to shoot people who violate our border, hopefully, we won't actually have to do... There's a word for the kind of structure we're increasingly seeing in the US, where the distinctions between the government and the corporate elite break down, and regular people lose their rights. It's called fascism. The "War on Drugs" and the "War on Terror" have both lead to huge abridgments of rights. I think this country needs to stop declaring war on things it can't attack. -- "Those who enter the country illegally violate the law." -- George W. Bush in Tucson, Ariz., Nov. 28, 2005
