Nobody could avoid having heard the music. Its not possible.
Absolutely. The Maltese Falcon, Gone With the Wind, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The Big Sleep, Citizen Cain, Rebecca, The original King Kong, Ben Hur (second one), Shane, The Quiet Man, Singing In The Rain, and thousands more were all 4-star films and all made by the big movie companies: MGM, Warner Brothers, RKO, Paramount, Columbia etc. during the studio days of the 30's, 40's and 50's. Hell even a three star "Film Noire" from the late 40's is better written and has more character development and more interesting people in them than does anything made today. Ben Affleck, Heath Ledger, Bah!
Today, the best American films are indie films, but even so they pale next to films from Hollywood's Golden Age.
But these are just symptoms of one part of the overall cultural tailspin Western Society is in.
