Yeah, I miss all those old CP-M apps that never made it to Windows, too.

First of all, why not? That old Mac still runs, right? Second, Hypercard having gone away years...

So I like SuperPaint and I'll miss it if I ever go to an Intel Mac. Maybe I'll hunt for a replacement. They say Omnigraffle is good.

What ones are you thinking of? Maybe there needs to be a list of Clbuttic apps and suggested OS X replacements.

Eh. From all the reports, the transition to Intel has been easy. And developers are always porting things to new technologies anyway, so moving processors isn't that big of a deal.

When I was working on Shockwave, we had four platforms to deal with: Mac 68k, Pac PPC, Windows 16 and Windows 32. It was merely a big cross-platform effort. Eventually support for 68k (where Director started!) went away, as did W16. After I left, they added OS X as merely another port and now OS X on Intel. With a properly designed application, it's not that big of a deal.

Hmm. My old G3s still work, as does my new (used) G4 DP. Are you suggesting that any moment now it will die, forcing me to buy a new computer and lose all my old stuff? That sucks!

I don't buy it for a moment. SuperPaint is over ten years old. It still runs on my G4DP, but it is the only Clbuttic app I sitll use. If I got an Intel Mac I'd have to find something else. But they're out there.

Well, if its a bespoke business app it's probably not just one Mac, but one per user of the app. You need...

Microsoft's compatibility strategies work like this: Everybody else buys the latest version of Word, and it automatically saves documents in the shiny new format. Only you can't open them up until you, too, but they new version. Thus you stay compatible. But guess what! The new version won't run on the old OS. So you get to buy a new OS now, too. And guess what! That won't run on that old doorstop, so now you get to buy a new computer. And that often comes with software bundles. So you stay compatible. Nice strategy.

There was limited compatibility even here, though it was indeed far from the standards MS would later maintain. It was possible to write a program that would...
