Well, half of what his foundation has set out to do is of benefit to the world: Improving world health.

New Dell Labreastude D510
I have a new client and the "gave" me a new Dell Labreastude D510 today. Gotta tell ya, I just have to laugh at Windows XP. I use it...

The other half of what his foundation does is spurious. Namely, it dumps Windows PCs into the education market, locking schools into the Windows OS, screwing schools with an order of magnitude higher support costs compared to Macintosh and screwing students with the less efficient, more user-hostile operating system. The result is the perpetuation of what I call The Stone Age Of Computing. Gates is very vocal about needing to improve schools in the USA, but his foundation's blatant promotion of Microsoft products is the exact anbreasthesis of his rhetoric.

Result: A hand help out in kindness and support toward the underprivileged while slapping them in the face with the other. Some philanthropist. Some hero.

-- Fortune Magazine, 11-29-05: What's your computer setup today? Frederick Brooks: I happily use a Macintosh. It's not been equalled for ease of use, and I want my computer to be a tool, not a challenge. Frederick Brooks is the author of 'The Mythical Man Month'. He spearheaded the movement to modernize computer software engineering in 1975
