I'm just pointing out how this sort of thing snowballs. The lack of real housing leads to unhealthy diet, which leads to medical problems, and then the lack of good health care makes them worse, reducing ability to work, etc.

Right, which is why the problem is not so much money, as time. If you have to work full-time (or more) to support a family, college gets much harder.

Look, it's a matter of statistics. None of these barriers is impossible to overcome, when you look at everything from the level of the individual. But for every new barrier, the number of people who won't overcome them all goes up.
