I'm a 'loyal kook' yet I bought, and am very happy with, the CoreDuo iMac instead of a G5 earlier this year.
Having bought a "G1" (7500) in 1995, a B&W G3 in 1999, a dualie G4 in 2002 it was time to upgrade but the iMac was clearly the better value for my needs. Hell, I've always thought the towers were overkill for me but found previous consumer offerings to be too crippled.
But now that Apple isn't going out of its way to cripple its consumer offerings (eg. supporting video spanning on the iMac and MB) I really like their consumer line. I've got a MB on order right now from Amazon.
I am looking forward to the upcoming Apple Conroe desktops, since they will make excellent XP workstations. While I am perfectly able to design and build my own PC from e.g. newegg, I think I would have a hard time exceeding Apple's design chops that the company will be applying to its flagship desktop offering.
