I just checked on his own web site and see that it actually says:

"You are enbreastled to a reward of at least $2.56 if you are the first person to report..."

I've adjusted the article I reference above, adding "(at least)" based on the above.

But I find that the Wiki article I mentioned above references another page specific to his rewards, where it is much more detailed about the rewards and the amounts. It mentions, for example, that "Valuable suggestions" (as opposed to typos-mistakes) are worth 32 cents, and that if he doesn't reply promptly he adds 5% interest for the time between when he gets the item and he gets around to responding.

It says that as of October 2001 he'd written more than 2000 checks, and as of March 2005 they'd totalled more that $20,000, but apparently very few of them are actually cashed.

Someone mentioned a doubling of the reward. True, but that applies only to coding errors discovered in TeX or Metafont, and apparently was "capped" at $327.68... or, perhaps, there have been no further bugs found.
