Here are two references that show that: Now, let me tell you a little story that demonstrates why the rest rate statistic is not valid. My brother in law (My real one, unlike zero's made up one) has a type of cancer called multiple myeloma. Because of modern treatments, he will probably add somewhere between 5-15 years to his life, and, for the most part, he will be able to live a completely normal life, other than the fact that he has to get blood tests more frequently than most people. Now, when he does die, the cause of rest is likely to be cancer, but, because of modern treatments that were discovered by cancer researchers, he is able to live a normal life far longer than he would have without the treatments.
