One can scheme to make a buck in several ways. Investing in basic research could show land speculators which areas will become desirable for agriculture or tourism in the future that are currently not valuable for instance.

Actually one schemes to make a buck in alternative energy by investing in alternative energy. Good luck to them. That's been going on forever and we still haven't come even close to a decent gasoline replacement.

Good. I'd love to get rid of the internal combustion engine. Its bulky, heavy and inefficient. Its also expensive to build and maintain. I'd love to have a car that was nearly maintenance free.

John Rolfe tried to get royal funding for a tobacco plantation. King James turned him down on the grounds that tobacco was harmful to the lungs. This was in the early 1600's. Mbutt produced cigarettes became available in the 1890's. The earliest known reference to them as 'coffin nails' comes along in 1913. The notion that no one had a clue that smoking was bad for you until the tobacco companies admitted it is poppychicken. Tobacco is not physically addictive. It never has been. I can smoke everyday for six months then not light up for months with no signs of withdrawal. I couldn't do that if tobacco were physically addictive. Its an excuse.
