Intel Mini first impressionsLets see: It's fast, no doubt about that. Much faster than my PPC Macs. That's about all its got going for it, though. :( -The hard drive is way too small for a "media center" or a desktop replacement. Mac Security: Update 04212006 &A#JD1Tg!d8 Ocal: --Tempest In A Teapot?-- MacFixIt today have started a review and discussion of this fairly vague set of vulnerabilities. I am going to post all of today's article in this post... -The Superdrive burns CDs way too slow. 24x is unacceptable for a machine I use on the desktop. I can live with the 8x DVD writes, but that's too slow also. Mac Security: Weekly Summary 04202006 &A#JD1Tg!d8 This weekly summary makes use of the Secunia Weekly Summary of OS vulnerabilities. You can sign up for their weekly newsletter and read details... -The default 512 megs of ram is too little, and both slots are taken up so both modules will have to be replaced. User replacing them is task nobody but a geek would attempt, anyway. -It refuses to play nice with my Canon printer on the network. My PPC Macs, PCs, and even the linux boxes work fine. -Couldn't get it to hook up to the wireless network until I realized I typed in the giant hex key wrong. Much easier if you can just type in the pbutt-phrase like on my Linux and Windows boxes. -It wouldn't work with one of the old B&W G3 usb keyboards that I love so much. Works fine on my PCs and other Macs. Had to use the Keyboard off a G4 since all the PC boards I have are PS-2. This still has me baffled. *** Well, at least I can sell the G4 Mini now. That damn thing is so slow as to be almost unusable. If Apple would have come out with the intel minis first they would have swayed lots more users and Fry's wouldn't have had G4 mini returns stacked up like cord wood back in the warehouse.
