Interesting Apple Experience For Someone Trying To Switch
Apple's forums are not open and public places for all material and subjects -- there is no reason for them to support posts that are, in effect, not about products but about Apple. The forums are about discussions that may serve Apple customers about Apple products -- and in that sense your specific experience isn't likely to help any other customers. There's no way to tell from your post if it is something that could happen to anyone else, but since it could not have any user-configurable solution (i.e., all solutions involve Apple directly) it doesn't really help to put it in a forum.
I don't have any idea what happened with the number, but I wonder if the registration of the number was lost -- they might discount any serial that isn't registered. I have heard of companies that consider invalid any serial which was later shared among pirate copies -- don't have any idea if Apple has done this, though.
