Introduction: Here is a useful page covering the history of Unix through 2003. Some keywords to watch for, related to this subject, are Mach, Linux, OSF (Open Software Foundation), Minix, Darwin.

Over the last few months there has been some demand-speculation-FUD regarding Apple dumping the Mach kernel in favor of the Linux kernel. This first came to my attention when Linux Torvalds recently made an attempt to tear down Mach while holding his own kernel in a superior light. Sorry, I have not been able to find a URL reference

I) There is a great recent series of articles covering the Linux kernel versus Mach kernel mythology by Daniel Eran:

Unraveling The Mac OS X Linux Kernel Myth, Parts 1 - 4

II) Here is another related story by Thomas Holwerda:

MacOS X, Linux, and Open Source

III) Also of interest is this quick note of denial by Apple, dated May 19th, that they are 'closing' the Darwin x86 kernel:

Apple Denies the Closing of Darwin x86 Kernel
