Mostly, the app file is the app. Everything the app needs is bundled within. Have a look: Right click the app, and select 'Show package content'.

Well, i'm impressed about one thing. The ease with which SAMBA works on Windows XP. Not...

The only other file there'll usually be will be a small preference file somewhere within the Library folder. This is as opposed to an entry in the one big file that is the registry. This will usually be a small file which can be deleted (use Spotlight to find it), or left in place just in case you decide to reinstall the app, your prefs will still be in place.

There are exceptions of course. Some bigger apps may have other files littered around, e.g. Garageband. Again, Spotlight will find them. Try it: Put 'Garageband' into Spotlight, and see how many other files and folders there are.

It is quite an elegant system (IMHO), but I must admit, it is a concept that confuses newbies about Mac OS more than any other issue I've found. Particularly those from a Windows background.
