Derek Currie wrote (in article Although they promise to by year end, well, they haven't said lowest priority in their universe right now, but the Powermac is on...

I have to point out that Apple have still not left the G5 chip behind. And there is a good reason. Nothing Intel have to offer is any faster. Nothing. Intel also don't have any 64 bit CPUs that Apple cares for, and Apple will never sell any towers or XServes that are not 64 bit.

Of course IBM, as usual, are missing out by not courting Apple with a faster and-or cheaper G5 Quad Core for the next generation of Mac towers and XServes. IBM really are shameful. Either than or they have hit a serious speed wall with the Power series.

I was reading today that Dell will be adding AMD CPUs to their offerings. The obvious reason why is that they are sick of the speed limitations of Intel chips. In the short term Apple might do well to follow Dell's example. As far as I know nothing is holding them back.

Intel 'promise' faster offerings within the next year, and maybe one of them will be worthy of the Mac towers and XServes. The 64 bit Core Duos are supposed to show up in early fall. 64 bit 'Double' Core Duos theoretically show up next winter. I'd hate to see tower and XServe Macs languish until next MacWorld, aka next January.

All in all the CPU business, IMHO, has crashed Moore's Law. I think it is going to take a technology leap beyond the current horizon to catch up again.
