More on apps, shelf space 1049Well, I might be wrong about deleting prefs on the Mac. But I do say that *if* I am wrong and *if* Mac applications will crash because of bad preferences values, or if they allow their prefs files to be structurally corrupted... .. well, that's sad comment on the state of Mac application software. But I don't really believe it's true. I still say its a placebo. snip But many computer users know almost nothing about how the computer works. They can only "dig" into the "innards" an infinitesimal degree, and that is most unlikely to be enough. Thus you see things like "tossing prefs" and "reinstalling apps", which are within the ken of ordinary users. They aren't effective; but they do not require much understanding. snip As I said, if this is happening is is a sad comment on the program you are using. :D snip I could be wrong, of course. But, in the Windows world, there are an awful lot of not-too-competant 'trouble-shooters' whose answer to any problem is to reinstall everything in sight. More on apps, shelf space 1050 These don't use Spotlight. What it does is watch where you navigate in the Finder and whenever... This doesn't actually fix anything, as a rule, but it sure makes you look busy. :D Not everyone is like that. Good trouble-shooters will try to discern what the problem actually is before trying to solve it. snip Trying to kick the habit? :D
