This begs the question: how can "hillbilly" be an ethnic slur when "hillbillies" aren't an ethnicity? If they are, then, are "trailer trash" an ethnicity? Are Yuppies an ethnic group? When one white person calle another "white trash" is that racism? NO. Racism is predjudice of one ethnicity over another, not clbutt predjudice within the same ethnicity. That's something else, entirely. People are getting in the habit of using these terms incorrectly and accusing people of being racist for the most innocuous of reasons. Last week, I called my local postmaster and compalined about the mail service. For the last several years, we've had a succession of mail carriers in this neighborhood who, seemingly, could neither read, write, nor speak English. Mail belonging to others would end up in my box and vice-versa almost on a daily basis. I went out and tried to talk to my carrier. She just looked at me blankly. I know that she didn't understand a thing I said. So, I broached the subject with the postmaster. "Can't you hire carriers who can at least speak, read, and write English?" I asked. His retort was that his job didn't include listening to racist remarks like that. When I countered with "I don't care if the mail carriers are gorgeous 22 year old blond Swedish females (well, actually, I do, but those reasons have language, they can't do the job. The postmaster called me a racist again, and hung-up on me. Go figure.
