You could solve alot of the problems you mention in this post by running Easy Ubuntu. It is a collection of scripts that will setup your video correctly on Nvidia and ATI fbs and install all of the universes etc. that you will need. It also installs all of those toy apps like Flash etc.

You can search for a package or function and Synaptic will warn of dependencies and install all of the related package also. If Synaptic does not thrill you try Adept, you can get it with Synaptec or if you like command lines ( and who doesn't? ) use "sudo apt get..." from your favorite terminal.

You choose it from the login dialog like an other desktop you may have installed...

You could have also installed Kubuntu or Edubuntu, etc. from your favorite package manager.
