Yes, you did--the sentence you snipped from the beginning provided *very* important context.

"I'm not a huge fan of Gentoo. I always end up spending all my resources compiling something or another (and inevitably break critical packages with the resulting tinkering). More of a Debian person myself (Ubuntu is nice too, because of the solid release cycle), even if I can't squeeze every last bit of potential out of the system."

"I'm not a huge fan of Gentoo" indicates that I am speaking specifically of the Gentoo Linux distribution, not GNU-Linux as a whole. By snipping that, you made it seem as if I was characterizing all of the platform. A very dishonest application of out of context quoting.

They didn't actually say that Gentoo was appropriate for every user. "Every user has work they need to do" is a (marginally) true statement, it just isn't related to the goal of Gentoo. In a formal essay, that sentence should have been removed as irrelevant--but it is acceptable in persuasive writing due to the perception it fosters.

No organization can be trusted to accurately represent their product-service. Be that Linux distribution or Apple. The closest I've seen is probably Debian or Linux from Scratch, and even they skew things in their own favor.
