If, for example, you have a webbrowser, an editor, and a debugger all open, all being used on one task, (debugging a bit of javascript) with an IM window chatting to another of the devs, alt-tab doesn't do squat, but I can put all the above on one desktop, and have an entirely different one, for other tasks. Multiple virtual desktops allow you to group things by tasks, rather than just applications. it's a damn sight easier to just change desktops. Faster than closing a bunch of disparate app windows, opening up another one, and then closing-minimising that one, and then opening the ones you hid a few seconds ago. Alt-tab doesn't do the job, it doesn't allow you to group things by task or function, only by programme.
