Where did you get the idea that calling a few people experts meant I didn't care about, or suggested ignoring, the user? Users...

I seriously think that if they DO put a ton of resources into designing their interfaces, its largely wasted money. Windows has ALWAYS been ugly, ill-conceived with an inconsistent and poorly defined metaphore to hold it all together. The things about the design that were poor when conceived are poor today (and seemingly will remain poor in Vista). Things like the Start Menu, the hidden volumes, the lack of resource forks in files and applications, the constantly, ever annoying pop-ups, the registry, the Windows "explorer mode" are all confusing and poorly implemeted. When I built my first Windows machine running Win95, I had to go buy a BOOK to figure out how to use it. Fuinny, I needed no book for the Mac with either tyhe original OS oe with OSX - and believe me, Apple's GUI approach is FAR from perfect, just a lot closer than Windows.

The thing that makes me wonder about MS' resource allocation on Windows GUI is the fact that they have never fundamentally changed it. Even Vista would be instantly recognizable to someone who has seen-used nothing but Win95 and maybe that's the idea, but one would think that if they planned to have an interface that they would carrying over for more than a decade, that it would be an interface WORTH carrying over. Obviously, M$ doesn't agree.
