Well, originally, the senate was supposed to represent the states, and senators were appointed by the governors of the states.

If there were no house, I'd have a problem with the senate, but with the house being represented on a population basis, there is a balance. It's not perfect, but it's workable.

The original reason for the EC is that our founding fathers, for all their voicing support of equality, really didn't trust the peepul, so inserted the EC as a buffer between the hoi polloi and the presidency.

BTW, the winner-take-all concept is not mandatory; each state sets its own procedures, and could if it wanted, insbreastute a proportional vote system. One state, Nebraska if I recall correctly, elects the EC on a district basis--each EC district elects its own member of the EC by simple majority. To date, though, every district has gone the same way in any given election.
