OT More Evidence That Al Gore Is Full Of It 486 George Graves When you say, "I don't think it shows that," what does "it" refer to? The model does show that. The model of the earth's temperature is very accurate over the past... I think, Lars, what you're trying to say is that the evidence leading to the conclusion that Global Warming is natural, rather than man-made isn't even good enough to be considered "weak evidence." Is that right? Well, buttuming that it is, I think the global temperature chart showing two distinct warming periods over the last century with a big 25-year hiatus between them is really all the proof needed. That chart completely destroy's the case for for this current warming trend being man-made. It's really quite simple. Anyway you look at it, the fact that the 1910-1945 warming trend and the 1977 - present warming trends reflect similar world temperature rises over similar time frames show that whatever contribution humans have made to the phenomenon must be miniscule. Between 1910 and 1945 the number of internal combustion engines, coal or oil fired electric generating plants, manufacturing facilities and human population expanded exponentially, but the rise in temperature did not change its rate over that entire period. During the 50's, 60's and part of the 70's, when America's industrial capacity was unparalleled, when more cars were on the road than ever before in history and when the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc nations were building and operating an industrial infrastructure totally devoid of any environmental concerns, and long before any pollution control was insbreastuted on any form of hydrocarbon burning, the trend stopped. It stayed stopped, more or less, for 25 years. Then in 1977 it started its current rise. This rise has resulted in the same amount of change over the roughly the same number of years as did the 1910-1945 rise. As third world nations bought more cars, the Chinese industrialized and the European economy resumed after the devestation of WWII, one would expect a lot faster rise in temperature and a lot larger change, but while the slope is a hair steeper now, it hasn't changed that much from the 1910-1945 rise and logic would dictate that it should be MUCH worse and accelerating. It isn't. This says that either Global Warming and Global Cooling are fighting each other (as some other poster postulated), thus keeping the rate of change in check, or, the contribution of human activity to a natural warming trend is miniscule. If its the former, we had better be finding ways to increase the effect of Global Cooling, while we take the next century to wean ourselves off of hydrocarbons completely, or if its the latter we need to either ride it out and learn to live with wholesale climate change like our forefathers did, or get to polluting our atmosphere with things that will reflect sunlight back into space (which I don't advise, BTW. Talk about playing with fire!). OT More Evidence That Al Gore Is Full Of It 485 John Actually, if you put any credence in the model by Meehl et al. cited in then... OT More Evidence That Al Gore Is Full Of It 487 How do you know that? There's no data there to show that the mean temperature would... -- George Graves The health of our society is a direct result of the men and women we choose to admire.
