Apple has missed the boat here with dashboard, they could make it actually useful for switchers and newbies in general by placing that type of information in well designed widgets instead of leaving rat droppings all over the normal UI.
They could also start making the supposed "short key icons" in the UI match up with the actual keys on the keyboard visually. Not the number of graphical "clues" that are clues to nothing, as the keyboard labels do not match the UI. The proper way to fix that is not with a widget, but with a keyboard that is properly labeled. Of all of them used in the UI, I think the cmd key is the only one represented the same way on the Apple keyboard.
