I do admit that my memory is a little cloudy that far back. So I do apologize for saying that Microsoft wrote Apple's first BASIC interpreter. I can only plead my old brain's lowered functioning.
Well, GWBasic came along, and replaced Microsoft's first BASIC. but it also was written by Microsoft.
Then, later, Microsoft also released Quick Basic (its first structured BASIC, other than AppleSoft).
There were several much better BASIC interpreters around, I admit. Microsoft's interpreted BASICs were easy to write "spaghetti code" with. There were better BASICs. But Microsoft did write the first BASIC for PCs. Once compiled BASICs began being written, it became much easier to avoid such "spaghetti code", since alphanumeric Labels could be used, which freed BASIC from consecutive line-numbers.
BASIC is a pretty simple language to write, my friend. Microsoft does not claim authorship of the first BASIC interpreter. Some University out East originally wrote it as a means of teaching programming.
