The Mac is Dead! Long Live the Wintel PC! was Apple ahead of schedule 3116

Actually, the term "PC", CAN'T be used to get a trademark (or one which would hold up before the Supreme Court,) since it describes a GENERIC object, a "personal computer", of which there were several BEFORE the IBM Personal Computer was "trademarked" (if indeed it was).

Hence, the term "personal computer". In fact, I don't even believe that IBM came up with the term in the first place. I think it was pretty much in the language of the day already.

Which is why IBM never tried to press any "trademark" issues once the clones began being produced. It would have cost them a poo-load of money to even press the issue, and would have gotten them exactly ZERO return on any legal expenditures. In fact, it would have put them in the hole, since the term is so generic. So they cut their losses, and gave up to the inevitable.

And Apple's done the same. They've cut their losses and done the same. But THEY are too stupid (or elitist) to give in COMPLETELY, and rename their brand the "Apple PC".

Let's ALL face it, ok? The term "PC" has always described a "computer" (ANY "computer") used by ordinary "persons". That it somehow became identified with personal computers which use MS-DOS or Windows OSes was unfortunate, and obviously showed ignorance of the English Language.

Of course, Apple fanatics can't bring themselves to think of themselves as "ordinary", so they can't bring themselves to believe they too use an "ordinary Personal Computer", like everyone else. Instead, they remain a bunch of teenaged megalomaniacs, like their Guru).

And the "Personal Computer" (of ANY brand) has NOT "died", it has instead "evolved" into MANY OTHER types of "personal computers" (even cellphones are "personal computers", for God's sake!).

So these idiotic wars over BRAND NAMES are just that: IDIOTIC!

Mike Originally, DOS was QDOS for Quick and Dirty Operating System. Just because they emphasized the word "Disk" when MS bought it does not...

No, it was a DOS. It was called MS-DOS for a reason. Notice that it wasn't called MS...
