The Need for "Single Window Mode" 3236
Dan Johnson That's not true. Complicated tasks can be performed with simple tools, even without multiplying the number of tools used. It just...

No, I don't agree; you need some way to switch windows, you you want big but not quite fullscreen windows.

The thing is, if you keep each indivual window very simple, you need more of them.

I'm a big fan of that. It was one of the more compelling reasons for buying this here Toshiba, for me.

I do not see how entering this mode at *boot time* makes it any better!

But I agree that Apple's single-window mode idea was flawed in that is messed up apps that use lots of windows. One of the reasons Maximize is better since you can apply it only to those apps that benefit.

Presumably I'd want those windows back sometime; how would I find 'dismissed' windows again?

"Absolutely destroys"?

Not at all. Works fine; not as intuitive as in the case where the windows do not overlap at all, but far from a 'disaster'.

Actually, it can use that space. You need only navigate to a folder with more content than "My Computer". Nor does that have to mean "many files"; you can put the explorer into "Thumbnail" or "Filmstrip" mode so you can view previews in all that extra space.

And even in the "My Conputer" folder, it could use more of the space. I seem to recall that Vista's Explorer will be doing this.

I see this as a pattern; apps are putting more content into their windows in order to take advantage of larger screens, when they are maximized.

Explorer has been doing this slowly but continuously since Win95 hit the street, has it not?

snip

They actually do move windows around, even when they don't need to, to acheive a tidy appearance.

snip

I think this buttertion is very hard to credit.

snip

Yes it did. Actually it required even more app support, since the old Toolbox didn't implement very much of the behavior for you.

snip

No use. The minute you make a foolproof API, they invent a better fool. :D
