In a Nanny State such as the UK, holding a gun up to just about anyone is going to make them extremely susceptible to suggestion. Why? Because the Government have decided (a very long time ago) that any type of weapon carried about one's person is grounds enough for incarceration. Doesn't matter if you're taking a set of kitchen knives to be sharpened. If you cannot show good cause for carrying what you're carrying, you can say goodbye to five years of your life. No question. This doesn't matter to the crim, he wants what he wants, he's a crim anyway, why should he pay any attention to the law?
This is why I carry as a minimum of documentation when I transport my air rifles:

it ain't a lot to carry, but it keeps me out of jail.
I also carry a (nonconcealed) sidehandle baton. Why? Because I'd rather split some crackhead's nut open than let him walk away with my rifles should he try for 'em. Just the sight of the baton getting drawn is usually enough to make them rethink their options.
