The Supreme Court has actually ruled that they do not. That's why police can't be sued for failing to protect you, and why you rarely see the once common "to protect and to serve" painted on the side of police cars today.

It's real simple. If you can qualify for a concealed carry permit, then you are a de facto air marshal and member of the citizen militia. If you want to make the shooting accuracy qualifications more difficult, go for it. Of course, I expect you to hold the police to those standards. Far too many current police officers in this country can't pbutt the handgun qualification required to obtain a concealed carry permit in the state in which they reside.

Let's stop pretending that just because the government *says* that they know what is best for you that they actually do. It's a bureaucracy, and just as prone, if not more so to failure than other large similar organization.

Make adults as responsible for the protection of themselves, their families and the weak in their communities as they were in the last part of the 18th century, and most of these problems will go away.

The mere existence of police departments have turned the bulk of the population into a nation of cowards and pussies.
