You have an application switcher that doesn't target specific windows, combined with a menuing system that relies upon a single menu targeting a specific window.

The one I mentioned above. The one you failed to read.

Can you come up with a good reason to do it?

They charge you 20-30% over on the hardware, usually, then rape you on software costs. How is this a better 'value'? They don't even deliver a higher-quality product for your money.

I've got some anecdotal evidence supporting the idea. I know of three people, personally, who were less confused by my GNOME desktop than they systems in desktop environments.

There's one feature on one of the apps. Now come up with three or four more.

And just out of curiosity, does Photoshop support Scheme yet? And, just for the record, you're at $780 in software now. So, for your $800, you get a lackluster operating system and a photo editing suite that handles CYMK

It's the best of all the non-Microsoft offerings, and generally good enough for most people.

I'm not a web developer, so I can't comment on quality--but there's Bluefish and Quanta (and Amaya), as well as the traditional method of using a normal text editor...

Couldn't prove that by me. Every time I decide to install Linux it turns out to...

You'd probably use SVG-SMIL if you were trying to put together animated graphics, video, and audio. Combine it with Javascript and you have an interactive display similar to Flash. As such, any SVG editor and "developer's" text editor would work.

Again, any SVG editor would work.

iTunes: Amarok is probably the closest immediate contender, though there are many jukebox apps for Linux that are very capable.

iMovie: LiVES maybe? Kino?

iDVD: dvdstyler, though the traditional method of writing the DVD menus by hand is also available.

iPhoto: F-spot

Garageband: Rosegarden

Yes, but in this case they are.

The system is as consistent as you want it to be. There's no rule saying you *have* to install those QT apps, if you don't want to. Just go dig up the GNOME equivalent, or vice versa.
