Yes, you have to take into account transportation costs, so as time goes by, and we have to use landfills farther away, the costs might change to favor recycling.
As far as sustainability goes, just because something isn't sustainable doesn't mean we shouldn't do it. Right now, and for the foreseeable future, recycling costs more (economically and environmentally) than using landfills, for many goods. So, we come out ahead using landfills now. When recycling technology improves, or landfill costs go up, then we can switch to recycling.
