But not on your own PC.

Good for you. Now, keep up with the conversation. Yes, memory these days is much better quality than it used to be. Chances are that when you purchase cheap RAM, you will...

Not the context that I intended. Most of these Ram vendors don't have environmental test chambers. These things are pretty pricey. Most of the Ram vendors are just resellers. And sometimes, like I had to, people return chips after opening up the package and finding out that they sent you the wrong chips. They take them back and test them in a PC. But this test is far from conclusive that it'll work correctly in a target PC that is different from another.

In future, you might consider not buying your system from Apple or with Applecare. This time I bought an intel Mac from an Apple reseller and they have a care...

True, but when a vendor like Apple orders ram sticks, they do have specific specifications for the vendor to follow. The loading that you mention is the old clbuttic fan-in and fan-out loading. Then there is the temperature tests, race conditions, frequency response, etc that has to pbutt. You won't get any real guarantees from companies like Kingston or most of the others. What we, the Navy, found out was that one goof up in handling chips usually reduces the life span of said chip but will still work... just not for very long. I tried ram sticks from Kingston and others and some lasted and some didn't. It is possible that the increased costs that Apple imposes is a fair indicator of quality and durability. IBM also wants more as well as Sun for increased memory in their machines. DEC was probably the highest costing company to the consumer, but their product also outlasted the compebreastors. I've still got my old vax4000 and it won't be long till it is 20 years old. I also have the DEC VT420 terminal and it still keeps on chugging away, contrary to the 4 monitors I've had to junk due to failures over the same period of time.
